Diagnostics
Objective: to identify myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, amblyopia ("lazy eye") or strabismus at an early stage.
What is checked and how:
Visual acuity is a standard test of how clearly a child sees at different distances.
Refraction – measures how the eye refracts (focuses) light; helps to understand whether glasses or lenses are needed.
o Devices: autorefractometer, retinoscope
Binocular vision is a test of how both eyes work together (coordination of movements, depth perception).
Devices: synoptophore, pleoptic simulators
Stereo vision – determines how the brain sees the volume and distance to objects.
Tests: stereo tests with anaglyph glasses, computer programs
Amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus are special tests for detecting a weakened eye and impaired coordination.
Diagnostic time: usually 40-60 minutes, because not only the "number" of vision is checked, but also the work of the eyes together, the strength of accommodation (the ability of the eye to focus) and the reaction to different loads.
